Triethylsilane is a mild reducing agent commonly used in organic synthesis, such as in the Fukuyama reduction reaction, where triethylsilane reduces thioates to aldehydes at room temperature. Another very important application of triethylsilane is the reduction of tertiary alcohols, benzyl alcohols, or aryl aldehydes and ketones to alkanes.Reaction conditions: in the presence of Bronsted or Lewis acid at relatively low temperatures (high temperatures or too strong acid conditions may lead to decomposition of triethylsilane). Commonly used reagent combinations are: Et3SiH/TFA, Et3SiH/BF3, Et3SiH/B(C6F5)3. Compared to other acidic conditions, B(C6F5)3 can be successfully carried out with catalytic quantities, and not only the substrates that can form stable carbon-positive intermediates, but also the primary alcohols, secondary alcohols, ethers, and carboxylic acids can be reduced to obtain the corresponding alkanes. It can be used with transition metal catalysts to do silicon-hydrogen fracture addition, such as the elimination of terminal alkoxy groups of sugars. Known large products such as oseltamivir phosphate, dagliflozin, empagliflozin, bilastine, etc. are used in the production of this reducing agent.
